During the Goodwood Festival of Speed, an annual motorshow and racing festival hosted in West Sussex, England, UK, the Czech automobile manufacturer revealed its newest creation: the Škoda Octavia vRS.
To offer their visitors a memorable experience, my employer at the time – Engage Works Ltd – got asked to build an interactive green-screen installation. People could sit in a mock-up car and record their driving experience. Several sections where then merged into an existing clip about the new Škoda Octavia vRS. This way users became the stars of their own individual TV commercial.
If the visitor fancied, they also had the option to get the video uploaded to YouTube (unlisted). In an email they would then receive a link to their video so they could watch it again or share it with their friends.
My role was to write the bespoke iPad applications which operated as controllers for the hosts so they could record the individual clips and preview them together with the visitors on a large screen that was part of the set up. A second iPad application served as a data collection tool to enable users to share their experience. As a member of Engage’s in-house staff I was also responsible again for creating the user journey and finally for making sure all of the components work together smoothly.
As the client was very happy with the installation, it was adapted and used for multiple future events. An example would be the motorshow in Frankfurt, Germany. For this event the software was extended to offer multiple languages.
